All of Lois Hole’s books: Favorite Perennials, Favorite Trees and Shrubs, Favorite Annuals, Favorite Roses, etc. are very useful. They have photos and descriptions of the plants and how to grow them. Just be mindful that Lois lived near Edmonton - a different eco-system than Calgary - so take about 20 % off the final size of most of the plants and note that plants she says are not so hardy may not do so well in Calgary.
